A wonderful large antique brass stirrup. This was a ceremonial stirrup for Spanish, Peruvian, and South American Conquistador-style riders. A leather strap would loop onto the bar on top, which could easily be replaced with a lighter-weight stirrup for serious riding. This stirrup is very decorative on each side. These would have been too heavy to use as a standard stirrup. Solid brass. 8 1/2" long to the point where the toe turns up X 4 " wide at the opening inside. Great for display or a bookend or door stop.
These brass stirrups or tapaderos copy the shape and decoration of a traditional leather boot worn by the early Spanish Conquistadors. The high quality of the metal casting is a direct inheritance of the metalworking skills displayed by Peruvian native populations before the conquest.
